Corporations, Not Friends
As the tech bros convene at Mar-a-lago, and the for-profit media corporations bend the knee to the wannabe tyrant, it feels like a good time to remind people that: Corporations are not your friends. Sure, as we’ve seen, those CEOs will act like they care as long as it sells what they’re trying to sell. You’ve seen it in Facebook, Amazon, back when they were courting the public. Now that they’re big enough that they are practically unavoidable at any turn, they don’t need you as much as you think you need them.
Think being the operative term here. You don’t need them. You do want them, though, don’t you? And you want them to like you maybe, or just be like you? No. Give it up. Yeah, maybe you can’t make a real break-up, but at least you can be on the same emotional level about them as they are about you. Be ambivalent, but conscientious. That is, remember that these corporations often have thousands of people in their employ, and those people need their jobs. But don’t ever think that the corporation loves you, or cares. And…if the corporations don’t care, and they’re trying to deregulate the government, what do you think happens next?
Yep. You guessed it. Not friends…closer to maybe…frenemies? Or, in some instances, just enemies. Know who works for whom. Also, this might be a fun tool: https://www.goodsuniteus.com.
