The Billionaire Boys Club

There’s a television series I remember from the 1980s that featured a bunch of billionaire children who got together and basically used their power and influence to ruin other people’s lives—for fun. The tagline was “you’re rich, and out of control.” That line has popped through my head for months now, especially after seeing the presidential inauguration. I imagine what it would be like for that group to actually play politics, instead of the stuff that they did, which usually was based in cruelty but not national politics, if I recall correctly. If they had been in politics, then it would have been the textbook definition of what the United States are staring down right now: an oligarchy.

What is an oligarchy? If you don’t think about politics and history all the time like <ahem> some of us, you’d be excused for not knowing, but it’s pretty simple: a bunch of rich people make all the decisions. Do you enjoy your representative government? My favorite oligarchy definition is actually the second on the list for merriam-webster:

| a government in which a small group exercises control especially for corrupt and selfish purposes

There’s a lot packed into that. Don’t worry - we have you covered. Listen to this podcast episode as we get deep into what that means and why we’re saying that America is currently an oligarchy. It’s not something we take lightly and neither should you.
