Are We There Yet?
All it really takes for authoritarianism to take hold is the lack of a serious opposition. It’s interesting to me because we don’t talk about this nearly enough. There’s a special term for this in economics: scarcity. If you have a scarcity of options in one area, like making a decision between Dave’s Killer Bread (wheat with sprouts) and buttermilk white, is relatively inconsequential, then you don’t have a problem. If you instead have a different scarcity (totalitarian party vs democratic party), then you have serious problems. The policies of the current administration are almost completely targeted toward reducing Democratic influences.
The question above is about whether we’ve arrived at a totalitarian regime. Think about that carefully, and listen to this podcast, before answering.
